    Basis set effects on the electron density and spectroscopic properties of CO

    The effect of basis set incompleteness on the deformation density of CO is studied by comparing various STO basis sets with a fully numerical (basis-free) result. A triple-zeta s, p basis plus one 3d and one 4f function appears to be practically converged. The convergence characteristics of other properties (Re, De, ωe, μ0, μ1, electric field gradient (EFG)) with respect to basis set size and type are also investigated. The convergence behaviour is similar for these properties and the deformation densities

    Induction of Tumor Growth After Preoperative Portal Vein Embolization: Is It a Real Problem?

    Although preoperative portal vein embolization (PVE) is an effective means to increase future remnant liver (FRL) volume, little has been published on possible adverse effects. This review discusses the clinical and experimental evidence regarding the effect of PVE on tumor growth in both embolized and nonembolized liver lobes, as well as potential strategies to control tumor progression after PVE. A literature review was performed using MEDLINE with keywords related to experimental and clinical studies concerning PVE, portal vein ligation (PVL), and tumor growth. Cross-references and references from reviews were also checked. Clinical and experimental data suggest that tumor progression can occur after preoperative PVE in embolized and nonembolized liver segments. Clinical evidence indicating possible tumor progression in patients with colorectal metastases or with primary liver tumors is based on studies with small sample size. Although multiple studies demonstrated tumor progression, evidence concerning a direct increase in tumor growth rate as a result of PVE is circumstantial. Three possible mechanisms influencing tumor growth after PVE can be recognized, namely changes in cytokines or growth factors, alteration in hepatic blood supply and an enhanced cellular host response promoting local tumor growth after PVE. Post-PVE chemotherapy and sequential transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) before PVE have been proposed to reduce tumor mass after PVE. We conclude that tumor progression can occur after PVE in patients with colorectal metastases as well as in patients with primary liver tumors. However, further research is needed in order to rate this risk of tumor progression after PV

    Composition, volume, and aspect ratio dependence of the strain distribution, band lineups and electron effective masses in self-assembled pyramidal In1-xGaxAs/GaAs and SixGe1-x/Si quantum dots

    We present a systematic investigation of the strain distribution of self-assembled pyramidal In1-xGaxAs/GaAs and SixGe1-x/Si quantum dots for the case of growth on a (001) substrate. The dependence of the biaxial and hydrostatic components of the strain on the quantum dot volume, aspect ratio, composition, and percentage of alloying x is studied using a method based on a Green's function technique. The dependence of the carriers' confining potentials and the electronic effective mass on the same parameters is then calculated in the framework of eight-band k .p theory. The results for which comparable published data are available are in good agreement with the theoretical values for strain profiles, confining potentials, and electronic effective mass. © 2002 American Institute of Physics

    Protocol of the SOMNIA project : an observational study to create a neurophysiological database for advanced clinical sleep monitoring

    Introduction Polysomnography (PSG) is the primary tool for sleep monitoring and the diagnosis of sleep disorders. Recent advances in signal analysis make it possible to reveal more information from this rich data source. Furthermore, many innovative sleep monitoring techniques are being developed that are less obtrusive, easier to use over long time periods and in the home situation. Here, we describe the methods of the Sleep and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Monitoring with Non-Invasive Applications (SOMNIA) project, yielding a database combining clinical PSG with advanced unobtrusive sleep monitoring modalities in a large cohort of patients with various sleep disorders. The SOMNIA database will facilitate the validation and assessment of the diagnostic value of the new techniques, as well as the development of additional indices and biomarkers derived from new and/or traditional sleep monitoring methods. Methods and analysis We aim to include at least 2100 subjects (both adults and children) with a variety of sleep disorders who undergo a PSG as part of standard clinical care in a dedicated sleep centre. Full-video PSG will be performed according to the standards of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Each recording will be supplemented with one or more new monitoring systems, including wrist-worn photoplethysmography and actigraphy, pressure sensing mattresses, multimicrophone recording of respiratory sounds including snoring, suprasternal pressure monitoring and multielectrode electromyography of the diaphragm

    Understanding uncertainty in temperature effects on vector-borne disease: A Bayesian approach

    Extrinsic environmental factors influence the distribution and population dynamics of many organisms, including insects that are of concern for human health and agriculture. This is particularly true for vector-borne infectious diseases, like malaria, which is a major source of morbidity and mortality in humans. Understanding the mechanistic links between environment and population processes for these diseases is key to predicting the consequences of climate change on transmission and for developing effective interventions. An important measure of the intensity of disease transmission is the reproductive number R0R_0. However, understanding the mechanisms linking R0R_0 and temperature, an environmental factor driving disease risk, can be challenging because the data available for parameterization are often poor. To address this we show how a Bayesian approach can help identify critical uncertainties in components of R0R_0 and how this uncertainty is propagated into the estimate of R0R_0. Most notably, we find that different parameters dominate the uncertainty at different temperature regimes: bite rate from 15-25^\circ C; fecundity across all temperatures, but especially \sim25-32^\circ C; mortality from 20-30^\circ C; parasite development rate at \sim15-16^\circC and again at \sim33-35^\circC. Focusing empirical studies on these parameters and corresponding temperature ranges would be the most efficient way to improve estimates of R0R_0. While we focus on malaria, our methods apply to improving process-based models more generally, including epidemiological, physiological niche, and species distribution models.Comment: 27 pages, including 1 table and 3 figure

    Magnetic field dependence of the exciton energy in a quantum disk

    The groundstate energy and binding energy of an exciton, confined in a^M quantum disk, are calculated as a function of an external magnetic field. The confinement potential is a hard wall of finite height. The diamagnetic shift is investigated for magnetic fields up to 40TT. Our results are applied to InyAl1yAs/AlxGa1xAsIn_{y}Al_{1-y}As/Al_{x}Ga_{1-x}As self-assembled quantum dots and very good agreement with experiments is obtained. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of the dot size on the diamagnetic shift by changing the disk radius. The exciton excited states are found as a function of the magnetic field. The relative angular momentum is not a quantum number and changes with the magnetic field strength.Comment: 10 pages, 17 figure

    Theory and design of Inx_{x}Ga1x_{1-x}As1y_{1-y}Biy_{y} mid-infrared semiconductor lasers: type-I quantum wells for emission beyond 3 μ\mum on InP substrates

    We present a theoretical analysis and optimisation of the properties and performance of mid-infrared semiconductor lasers based on the dilute bismide alloy Inx_{x}Ga1x_{1-x}As1y_{1-y}Biy_{y}, grown on conventional (001) InP substrates. The ability to independently vary the epitaxial strain and emission wavelength in this quaternary alloy provides significant scope for band structure engineering. Our calculations demonstrate that structures based on compressively strained Inx_{x}Ga1x_{1-x}As1y_{1-y}Biy_{y} quantum wells (QWs) can readily achieve emission wavelengths in the 3 -- 5 μ\mum range, and that these QWs have large type-I band offsets. As such, these structures have the potential to overcome a number of limitations commonly associated with this application-rich but technologically challenging wavelength range. By considering structures having (i) fixed QW thickness and variable strain, and (ii) fixed strain and variable QW thickness, we quantify key trends in the properties and performance as functions of the alloy composition, structural properties, and emission wavelength, and on this basis identify routes towards the realisation of optimised devices for practical applications. Our analysis suggests that simple laser structures -- incorporating Inx_{x}Ga1x_{1-x}As1y_{1-y}Biy_{y} QWs and unstrained ternary In0.53_{0.53}Ga0.47_{0.47}As barriers -- which are compatible with established epitaxial growth, provide a route to realising InP-based mid-infrared diode lasers.Comment: Submitted versio
